Getting hearing aids helps you reconnect with the people and sounds you’ve been missing. They’ll bring you the tune of your favorite song, the sound of your grandkids playing at Mickey’s Kingdom Park and the punchline of your partner’s corny jokes that you’ve heard before but still love. To get the most benefit from your device, you’ll need to attend a fitting appointment.
What is a Fitting Appointment?

A fitting appointment is when we program your hearing aids’ settings to ensure they meet your hearing needs perfectly. It usually arrives a couple of days or weeks after your hearing test, once your devices reach our clinic.
What Happens During a Hearing Aid Fitting?
When you come into the office, we’ll show you your new hearing aids and then adjust their settings.
A key part of the appointment is a real-ear measurement. This involves placing a small microphone in your ear canal while you wear your hearing aids. We play sound through the devices, which allows us to measure exactly how sound behaves inside your ear. We’ll make adjustments as needed to ensure your hearing aids deliver the right level of amplification for your unique anatomy and hearing loss.
Once we’re confident that the settings are correct, we’ll show you how to use your devices.
Learning To Use Your Hearing Aids
Before you leave, we’ll provide hands-on guidance on daily device care and use. This includes how to insert and remove your hearing aids, charge or change batteries, clean them and adjust settings. If your hearing aids connect to a smartphone app, you’ll also learn how to fine-tune volume or sound modes for different environments.
The Benefits of Professional Hearing Aid Fittings
If you’ve been looking into hearing aids for a while, you’re probably aware that they come with a prescription, like the ones we fit at Hearing Healthcare Center, Inc., or as over-the-counter (OTC), like the ones you see at big retailers.
You can only get prescription hearing aids from a licensed hearing care professional. These devices are designed to match your specific hearing needs, and that customization makes a difference.
A 2025 trial surveying 245 participants found that while OTC hearing aids improved audibility, people who received prescription hearing aids reported higher overall satisfaction. The personalization you get during a hearing aid fitting is a big part of that quality difference.
