Many of us know that heart-stopping feeling when we drop our smartphones in a puddle or see it skidding to the edge of the Burdette Park pool. That panic is completely understandable because we rely on our phones every day. Hearing aids are no different.
Your hearing aids connect you to the world. They bring you your best friend’s voice as they tell a funny story from work, the calming hum of a fan or the essential safety noises you rely on every day. Because we rely so heavily on our hearing aids, it’s natural to feel scared when they get wet. The good news is that many modern hearing aids have a protective coating that keeps water from damaging their delicate internal components. However, you should still try to limit water contact as much as possible.
An estimated 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from hearing aids. Learning how to safely dry your hearing aids is one effective way to ensure you keep enjoying those benefits.
Hearing Aid Drying Steps

If you accidentally splash or submerge your hearing aids, take the following steps:
- Remove your devices from the water source
- Gently pat them dry with a soft, absorbent cloth
- Place your devices in a drying jar or electric hearing aid dryer
- Remove your devices once they are completely moisture-free
After you remove your devices from their dryer, put them back in your ears and check for distorted sound. A few examples of distortion include:
- Whistling noise
- Broken or staticky sound
- Low volume
If you notice any of the above sound distortions, schedule a repair and service appointment with one of our specialists.
